Some Jews in New York City have burned their masks in protest against restrictions placed to tackle spread of the coronavirus.
After New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the restrictions, the protesters took to the streets of a Brooklyn neighborhood to show their opposition in traditional costumes.
Their lawmakers accused Cuomo of orchestrating "a duplicitous bait-and-switch," as he had allegedly promised that synagogues would be permitted to operate at 50 percent capacity.
Radio host and local celebrity Heshy Tischler said he would take legal actions against "Cuomo and the idiot [Mayor Bill] de Blasio."
Over 23,000 people have died in New York City in the pandemic with some 250,000 cases so far.
The citys daily positivity rate -- which was around 1 percent for months -- crossed the 3 percent threshold last week, marking the highest daily positivity rate in the city since June.
"This is going to be an ongoing game of whack-a-mole, but it very much depends on the cooperation of the general public," Dr. Syra Madad, senior director of the special pathogens program at the citys hospital system, told ABC News.
Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency medicine physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, also said that multiple waves of the pandemic may be on the way.
"I think were in for a rough patch this fall-into-winter season... It may not just be a second wave. It could be multiple waves and we have to be aware of that," he said. "Its essential that all people continue to wear masks, social distance, and practice hand hygiene."
